Luke ran a hand through his hair. "You'd step in front of a moving speeder for me," he said softly. "I didn't really know until today that not everyone has that kind of security...knowing that someone's always watching out for them."
He shrugged, looking a little uncomfortable with Anakin's silence. "I didn't have a father most of my life," he concluded. "It's ridiculous to stop talking to the one I have now just because you didn't live up to my holodrama fantasies."
Anakin winced a bit internally to hear that he'd ruined his son's view of himself--even though he'd known it, hearing it said aloud still hurt--but he held Luke's gaze steadily.
"I'd wonder why you hadn't seen the speeder in the first place," Anakin said, keeping the topic away from the heavy emotional things he was so terrible at verbalizing, "but yes, I would."

"That's what I do," he said, voice firm. "I stand between you and things that want to harm you. Or your sister. Or your niece."

"I do that, too," he said, but he gave his son a small smile, "but if you're volunteering to watch my back occasionally..."
