Office hours [all day]

Anakin had slept a little last night, but Danyel's eyes haunted him when he let his eyes close for too long.

He'd seen that expression in his own face for entirely too many years.

So he was in his office keeping himself very, very busy with a loud, complicated piece of machinery, basically begging for a distraction.

The door was even open.

"It is a meditation lantern," he explained. "I brought it with me from Karse." He pulled a tiny candle and the lighter with the tiger on it out of his satchel, lit the candle and popped it inside the glass, closing the tiny door behind it. "They've been made this way, from bronze and glass, for hundreds of years."

As the flame flickered, the office was filled with a warm golden glow, flashes of red from the ruby glass playing across the walls. "It's peace and warmth, whenever you need it. I thought," he looked down at the lamp, "you might like it."

"You're more than welcome. Luke said that things from other worlds interested you, and I thought of this." Karal's eyes were fixed on the glass and the flickering light. "We did the right thing, didn't we?" he asked quietly, trying not to have doubts but having them all the same. "To take his memories from him?"

He breathed out a long breath and nodded. "He deserves a chance at as ordinary a life as he can manage," he said, eyes flicking up to meet Anakin's. "Thank you. I think I just needed to hear it said out loud by someone who wasn't me."

Sunlord knows, there are things I would gladly forget. "Now he can have a childhood and a good life. And, from what Gabriel has told me, he saved his world. The angel he killed was Pyriel, the one who led those who wanted to destroy humanity. With him gone, the others will cease to be a danger."

"I'm not sure anything is saved forever," he said sadly. "But you're right." He nodded firmly, looking away from the light. "Any time is good, and Gabriel is an angel again now." Karal had no idea how he felt about that - right now, he wasn't thinking about it. "So he will know if anything changes, and will have the power to help when the time comes."

Karal eyed him cautiously. "Servants of a god, and not even Altra was a match for them," he said carefully. "At least you tried."
