Anakin hadn't slept in a couple of days.

Not that this was so terribly unusual for him since coming back from his galaxy, but today the shadows under his eyes were particularly noticeable.

He was flipping absently through a magazine that was six months old and fighting to stay awake.

The door was open.

It's Friday, so Aeryn's here as usual, knocking on the doorframe like he shouldn't expect her by now.

Anakin rubbed at his eyes and gave Aeryn a small smile. "Morning."

"Morning," she says back, and frowns. "If you need to sleep that badly, I can knock you out." It would not actually be the first time. Or the second.

Anakin shook his head. "Nightmares," he said shortly. "Mine were so bad they woke Luke up halfway across town. Staying awake's helping him out."

Interesting logic there.

Wow, he has been awake a while. "So you give up sleep entirely? That didn't work out so well when Callisto tried it." And Aeryn had to knock her out.

"Until I know that when I close my eyes, I won't see you coming at me with a Vader mask?" Anakin whispered. "Yes."

She blinks. "I wouldn't come at you with a Vader mask," she says slowly.

Anakin wrapped his arms around his chest. "It felt real enough," he said.

Aeryn doesn't dream much herself, but thanks to John she's gotten used to this sort of discussion. "Just because it feels real doesn't mean it is. Dreams are really people's way of messing with themselves."

Again, yeah, not much of a dreamer.

Anakin nodded. "Dreams have gotten me in more trouble in my life..." he muttered. "All of the wisdom of the Jedi and they never figured out how to turn the damn things off."

"Well, that might require discipline," she says, trying to be a little lighter.

"I'm very good at..." Anakin shook his head. "I'm too tired to even pretend that's true."

"Anakin, you can't keep on like this," Aeryn tells him. "You're going to wear yourself down."

"And collapsing into the punch bowl at the dance tomorrow would be humiliating," Anakin agreed, rubbing at his eyes.

"Yes, please don't drown like that. Even if it's just a little bit of sleep. An arn. Something."

Anakin nodded. "I know."

"Or you could pass out in the punch bowl, and once you've been fished out someone will be guaranteed to put a tiara on your head."

Anakin shuddered. "And take pictures."

"They'd end up in the yearbook."

"You think the threat of public humiliation is going to make me sleep?" Anakin said, staring at her blearily.

"Well, if that happened I'd lock you in a room and force you to sleep, so it would be in your best interest, really."

Anakin nodded. "If this goes another few days, I'll take you up on it," he promised.

"I'm not sure what sort of answer I'm expecting, but is there any way I can help?" Weird question, she knows, but...

"I really wish I knew," Anakin said, sounding frustrated. "I don't like not knowing how to fix things."

"I don't know what to say," she says. "You know if you need to talk, or anything? I'm used to very little sleep."
