Anakin was in his office deciding on the perfect Valentine's Day gift for Rory.

And definitely not plotting how to have a Talk with a lightning-tossing Jedi or neutralizing a student with a penchant for speaking in the third person.

The door was open.

"Not so far," Anakin said after a pause to check in the Force. "I still don't trust him further than Threepio could toss him."

"Oh, definitely not," Jaina said, stepping inside. "Yesterday he was twisting things around to think up hypothetical self-defense situations. He'll do something like this again, just learn from his mistakes."

"Not if he wants to live," Anakin replied flatly. "I wasn't going to skewer him in front of you and Luke, but that doesn't mean the option is off the table."

"He knows that much," she said. Because Jaina had tried to make that very clear.

"Then the question becomes how far he thinks he can push me before I'll react," Anakin said. "He won't like that answer."

"With that ego he probably doesn't think he'd get caught," she pointed out.

Anakin rolled his eyes. "So did Dooku. And Palpatine."

"And most bad guys out there. Somehow I just didn't think we'd have one here." She'd sort of liked when things were easy, dammit.

Anakin gave her a small, sympathetic smile. "I know. I'm working on it."

"It's not just your job," she pointed out. She still wasn't at the point where she trusted Doom with John in any way.

"You and Luke have enough going on," Anakin countered. "If I can't take down a teenager with a penchant for the dramatic, I'm not sure I'd be able to look at myself in the mirror."

He glanced down at his hands. "And I taught him. I should have seen this coming."

"Okay, first, what do I have going on that I can't even help?" Jaina asked. "Second, a lot of people should be playing the 'I should have' game."

"I have slightly more experience picking out danger signs than other people here," Anakin said bitterly. "And you have a war going on at home. I have an obligation to make sure you don't have something here to divide your focus."

Stubborn, stubborn man.

"Seriously?" she asked, frowning. "No one here has any obligation regarding me. Especially when I'm here."

Anakin gave her a look. "Of course I do. Don't be ridiculous."

"I'm not. It's not up to you or anyone else here to worry about my focus. That's my job. If anyone else is doing that for me, I'm doing something wrong."

"And if I'm not doing something to help you, I'm a failure as a relative," Anakin shot back. "I can't exactly strap into an X-Wing and watch your back against the Vong, but idiot mask-wearing teenagers? That I can handle."

Because saying he worried was far too easy.

"There aren't words for how badly I want everyone to stop thinking they need to fight my battles for me," she decided.

"It's not your battle," Anakin snapped. "The one at home is your battle. This one is our battle, and I call dibs."

"If it's really ours, you can't call dibs," she said.

"You're just upset you didn't think of it," Anakin said maturely.

"How old are you?" she asked.

Besides, she didn't call dibs, she just went ahead and did it.

"I don't see how that could be relevant," Anakin said haughtily.

"Wow," was all she said.

Anakin gave her an impish smile--one that not many people ever got to see.
