Anakin was in his office deciding on the perfect Valentine's Day gift for Rory.

And definitely not plotting how to have a Talk with a lightning-tossing Jedi or neutralizing a student with a penchant for speaking in the third person.

The door was open.

Karal had weighed it up but, finally, had decided to stop in and see how Anakin was.

Even if he couldn't quite shake the feeling that it might not be a good idea.

He knocked quietly on the door. "If I'm disturbing you, I could return later."

Anakin looked up, eyes and tone carefully neutral. "Now is fine."

That was not overly encouraging. Karal swallowed once and came in anyway. "Thank you," he said quietly, folding his hands. "I simply wanted to see how you were faring." After what Jaina had told him, he'd been worried.

Anakin raised an eyebrow. "Last week was trying," he finally offered.

"Jaina told me what happened." Karal looked at the floor, then back up. "I'm not here to bother you, I promise, or annoy you," he hoped, "I was just worried for you. I wanted to make sure you were all right."

Anakin finally relented just a little, giving Karal a small smile. "It's nothing we couldn't handle," he assured him. "Certainly nothing that hadn't happened to me before."

"I know, and Jaina said much the same thing." he smiled back, very tentatively. Part of Karal had needed to see for himself. "If there's anything I can do, for any of you, you know I will."

Anakin nodded, clearly mulling over saying something.

"You had a date."

Karal broke into a huge, beaming smile. "I've had two, and Evey said she'd come to the dance with me."

He was practically radiating happiness.

River showed up in the morning, stopping on the doorstep, her head tilted. She watched Anakin, smiling a little.

Anakin smiled back. "Good morning, River."

She entered the room. "Good day?"

"Better now," Anakin said, smiling.

She let out a giggle and sat down in the nearest chair. "Busy?"

"Not terribly," Anakin replied, smiling. "How are you?"

There were flashes in her mind about librarians called Bob and his lack of knowledge about things she wanted to know, and about a half-brained girl who might prefer Eels. She tried to move away from those thoughts though and looked up at Anakin. "Good," she said.

Anakin didn't look entirely convinced. "Really."

Jaina came by a little earlier than normal, greeting him with, "No more kidnappings since Friday, right?"

"Not so far," Anakin said after a pause to check in the Force. "I still don't trust him further than Threepio could toss him."

"Oh, definitely not," Jaina said, stepping inside. "Yesterday he was twisting things around to think up hypothetical self-defense situations. He'll do something like this again, just learn from his mistakes."

"Not if he wants to live," Anakin replied flatly. "I wasn't going to skewer him in front of you and Luke, but that doesn't mean the option is off the table."

"He knows that much," she said. Because Jaina had tried to make that very clear.

"Then the question becomes how far he thinks he can push me before I'll react," Anakin said. "He won't like that answer."

"With that ego he probably doesn't think he'd get caught," she pointed out.

Anakin rolled his eyes. "So did Dooku. And Palpatine."
